Stone was abundant in the Holy Land and was used in the construction of city walls, buildings and many other public structures. To split stone, masons would drive wooded stakes into the rock and then soak them with water. The wood expanded causing the stone to break free. Chisel and hammer were then used to square-off or dress the stone. Stonemasons still practice in part of the Middle East today.
